Temperature in Rio

Let’s talk just a moment about temperature in Rio. It’s winter right now, so average temperature during the day is ranging between mid 70’s and lower 80’s. It’s hot. During the day, in the sun, it is hot. Now this is much lower than the average temperatures during the summer, for sure, but still, I’m sweating. All this to say, that Rio is the city that first made me appreciate a cool shower, because the idea of a hot shower when you are sweating this much is truly unappealing. However, these folks in Rio have figured out how to refrigerate liquids in a way that puts the United States to shame. I am not kidding, so though, I don’t want a hot shower while here, I also do not have the constitution to handle a purely cold shower in Rio. Now all of the bathrooms we’ve ever stayed in, and we are usually in high rise building built some time between the 50’s and 80’s, have little windows in the shower that open up to an odd little corridor between the apartments. It’s the only ventilation for the shower, so you keep the window open. And yes, you can hear folks in other apartments in their shower while you shower. I have been serenaded many times by enthusiastic shower singers while in Brazil. Showering in another country is always an adventure, because it’s not always obvious which knobs do what, and in this case, it took me a little while to figure out which knob was for hot water and which was for cold. As I stated earlier in this post, the folks in Rio have figured out how to refrigerate liquid to temperatures far below the normal range most folks are accustomed to, and a blast from the purely cold tap will just about stop your heart! This is the joyful experience the folks in the building with me experienced when I showered for the first time in our lovely little apartment, and as that blast of arctic water hit my back and rear end, instead of a lovely song, whomever happened to also be showering was treated to a loud, sharp, “Holy Sweet Jesus!” I do believe my heart also stopped, for just a moment.

Now all of this to say, that this magic with refrigeration extends beyond water in Rio, and I’m here to tell you that this place serves the coldest beer I have had EVER, ANYWHERE. It is kind of amazing. Their standard house beer, called Choppe, is really a non descript little beer. Not too strong, no kick of an after taste, mild, maybe just a little bit citrusy, BUT it is fantastic because it is so dang COLD! And it doesn’t matter where you get it – a restaurant, bar, or out on the beach, this beer is so cold it would instantly freeze the taste buds of a polar bear! I love it. It is one of the most refreshing things you can drink around here, and I’m not a huge beer fan. So there you have it, if you want the coldest beer in town, you need to come to Rio. Enjoy!

A Day in Botafogo

Ahhh, I am finally feeling in vacation mode. After a peaceful sleep, I woke up to a beautiful 80 degree day (it is winter, after all), and no place that I had to be at any particular time. Our apartment came equipped with a perfect little espresso machine, so the coffee was just as we like it – robust and flavorful. I have a beautiful view of the Cristo Redentor from the veranda, and my darling Mauro visited the nearby market and brought back my favorite cheese, and a selection of breads and other favorites. We enjoyed a leisurely meal, some much overdue conversation, and the excitement of planning out things to do during the rest of our stay.

Today was spent exploring Botafogo a little bit, and of course visiting Carolina and Catarina! Rio, like most larger cities is an interesting mix. It is loud and filthy, with grime caked into every available nook, cranny, and crevice. It smells of a mixture of earth, garbage, and vehicle exhaust – sometimes individually, and sometimes as a combination of all. It is busy, with traffic zipping and people hustling down the walk ways; and yet, the pace somehow feels a little more relaxed and slower. It is beautiful, yet a little rough around the edges. I have enjoyed the mixture of architecture, with the old and stately nestled between the high rises of the 50s, 60s, and 70s. It’s not the same beach vibe as Ipanema, but I like it. It’s a little more family oriented, and we’ve passed many strollers, play grounds, and schools.

We spent a little bit of time with Catarina and her mother ( I swear, the baby spam post is coming!), and then had a lovely dinner at one of the popular areas of the region. It’s an old warehouse that has been converted into little restaurants, a little market area, and some specialty shops. Mauro and I went very traditional Brazilian with our food choices, and Olivia chose a nice pasta. We then did a little shopping in the market, and that is always fun when in another country! It’s so interesting to see the items they stock, the different packaging – especially for brands we also carry, and notice the set up for checking out, etc. It’s been a full, but relaxing day. Now to wrap this up with a few more photos, and get ready to sleep.  Boa Noite.

Flight Day

Breathing. If you know me at all, you know I hate flying. Trying to hold off on my special little pills until closer to time, but it’s getting difficult.

We are mostly packed. At least all of the Ecomenda’s (items requested) going to Brazil are packed! Two suitcases. I do believe this is the least amount of items we have ever brought to Brazil from the United States. Of course, the third item is the car seat – which will be an item of checked luggage as is. Still, only two suitcases! I am amazed.

Fur babies have been taken care of. We are leaving the two cats at home this time. One of Olivia’s friends will be caring for them. I’m hoping it will ease their stress a bit to be in familiar surroundings. Cadbury, the bunny, has gone to the vet for boarding. As always, the crew at Webb Animal Clinic was thrilled to see him. He is a favorite critter, as his easy going personality charms everyone who comes in contact with him. He is quite at ease at the vet’s, and his stay will be like a little spa vacation. He will be spoiled thoroughly!

We’re down to the hour countdown. Next post will be from Brazil! See you in South America.

Preparation

Three days out! The inventory, laundry marathon, and frantic countdown has begun. May has been a crazy month for all of us, so our usual leisurely pace of trip preparation has not been an option. Two days ago, Olivia graduated High School, we’re still dealing with company from her special day, Mauro and I both have to work at least one day this week (before we leave), care for the fur babies is still in flux, Olivia’s car had to be towed to the shop and we’ve heard nothing, the deluge of rain means the yard hasn’t been mowed…

I could go on, but none of this changes the fact that in Three Days (Wednesday, May 30) we will board a plane headed for Rio to visit Carolina, Bernardo, and celebrate the First Birthday of Catarina! Breathe…just breathe…
